Last weekend I decided to check out the greatest gardens in all of New York City- the botanical gardens in the Bronx. The gardens are the former estate of the founder of Lorrilard Tobacco Company and contain some of the premier gardens in the Northeastern United States as well as some of the last remaining old growth forests anywhere. Check out these pictures of plants and wildlife!
The vegetable garden was incredible. There were hundreds of cherry tomato flowers on just one plant. I wish I could grow them like this!
They even had a compost bin. A little fancier than mine!
Bright red swiss chard.
Tomatos!
Peppers!
A unique tomato variety of some kind.
We even spied a Northern Short-Tailed Shrew!
Beautiful pond lilies. (I think)
And pond lily buds. They look like shower heads.
Birds of paradise.
Lemon to the lime, lime to the lemon.
The conservatory.
Baby wood ducks!
The old growth forest.
Bronx River Waterfall
The Bronx River
Rose Garden
Sculpture by Henry Moore.
The old Mill Building.
An Eastern Cottontail Rabbit.
This is a beautiful piece of nature hidden in the Bronx. It's certainly worth a trip!
