Wine Cork Trivet

Wine corks are an amazing thing. They’re wood (well bark actually) but they seal liquid inside a glass bottle for years without leaking or spoilage (well usually). They are also very heat resistant. This latter property makes them particularly suitable to making a trivet. Plus it looks great.

I began by making a frame around a plywood backing. In this case I made the frame from a piece of maple from a tree in my parent's yard. I measured out the rough dimensions of the assembled corks to determine the size of the interior, but this was going to be a guess because corks are many different lengths. This is in essence, a picture frame around a piece of plywood, so you could use a picture frame as well, as long as the corks provide enough clearance that the pot will not touch the frame.

From here I glued the corks to the bottom of the trivet and also to each other. I use this trivet all the time, and the corks have yet to show any sign of singeing or damage. A really cool piece I get a lot of complements on! You can do this same project in a larger scale and make a really cool corkboard!
